== About InPlaLabs==
'''InPlaLabs''' is a KA2 Cooperation Partnership Erasmus+ project in the field of Higher Education, and its full title is '''Transnational Network of Integrated Planning Labs: Co-creating knowledge on forward-looking transdisciplinary planning perspectives addressing climate change and urban life in the post-pandemic city'''.

InPlaLabs aims to form a multi-level, multi-stakeholder network of knowledge nodes on integrated planning, coming together to exchange, co-create and share knowledge on transdisciplinary planning perspectives and relevant forward-looking green and digital skills.

This novel approach is based upon the necessity to cover the inadequate synergy and lack of systemic collaboration in planning-related higher education with their surrounding knowledge ecosystems of practice and policy actors to co-create the crucial knowledge on forward-looking transdisciplinary planning perspectives and the required green, digital, and intercultural skills to address climate change and urban life in the post-pandemic city.

It is collaboratively implemented by the [https://www.survey.ntua.gr/en/departments/geo National Technical University of Athens] (coordinator), the [https://www.ucy.ac.cy/?lang=en University of Cyprus], the Athens-based interdisciplinary planning group [https://www.commonspace.gr/en commonspace](Athens, Greece), the urban analytics company [https://urbancalculator.se/ Urban Calculator] (Gothenburg, Sweden) and the social cooperative [https://www.bondofunion.eu/en/ Bond of Union] (Palermo, Italy).

''InPlaLabs project is co-founded by the European Union and the Greek State Scholarships Foundation under the grant agreement No. 2023-1-EL01-KA220-HED-000160477 Erasmus+''

== The Challenge ==
There is a growing understanding of the urgency for planning-related actors to tackle the complex issues relating to climate change, the overuse of resources, and the associated local and global urban health impacts, and in parallel, to strengthen their own resilience. Furthermore, although the planning community experiences that urban planning can facilitate a change of paradigm towards sustainability, it still faces barriers in producing work that tackles climate-change issues and encourages environmental sustainability. The primary challenge in this goal is the lack of systemic collaboration in planning-related higher education with their surrounding knowledge ecosystems of practice and policy actors to co-create the crucial knowledge on forward-looking transdisciplinary planning perspectives and the required green, digital, and intercultural skills to address climate change and urban life in the post-pandemic city.

== Vision, Objectives and Target Groups ==
InPlaLabs aspires to develop a Transnational Network of multi-stakeholder Integrated Planning Labs for knowledge co-creation on climate-resilient planning.
It envisions to influence the higher education ecosystem towards integrated planning by approaching integration under a comprehensive 3-fold framework:
* '''''Discipline-based''''' '''integration''': Highlighting the complementary value of different disciplines relevant to sustainable planning (urbanism, mobility, transport planning, participatory planning, evidence-based planning, urban analytics, social sciences etc)
* '''''Method-based''''' '''integration''': Initiating the dialogue among different approaches and schools of thought involved in planning (quantitative approaches, qualitative approaches, participatory approaches)
* '''''Role-based''''' '''integration''': Including the different city-panning knowledge actors (urban education and research, urban practice, urban policy) and the different experiences they provide, as crucial input for creating knowledge towards integrated planning.

In this context, InPlaLabs objectives are:
* '''Knowledge Exchange''': Foster collaboration among higher education institutions and knowledge actors in planning.
* '''Knowledge Co-creation''': Facilitate co-creation of knowledge among planning stakeholders for climate-resilient and transdisciplinary planning.
* '''Knowledge Sharing''': Enhance the skills of city planning higher education students and other planning actors through targeted training and knowledge-sharing initiatives
* '''Inclusive Participation''': Ensure diverse and inclusive participation in all network activities.
* '''Long-term Sustainability''': Establish a sustainable and impactful network for continuous improvement and innovation in planning.

InPlaLabs envisions becoming a leading network of (diverse) labs that pioneers integrated urban planning methods and drives the global agenda for climate-resilient and vibrant cities. Plus, InPlaLabs endeavours to advance HEd ecosystem knowledge for promoting truly integrated planning. Actually, this planning concept embraces integration based on combining disciplines, roles and approaches (qualitative, quantitative and participatory).

== Meet the initiators ==
A fundamental concept for InPlaLabs derives from the European Institute of Technology’s knowledge triangle. We re-conceptualized the knowledge triangle specifically for integrated planning, resulting in three nodes representing the crucial knowledge actors of integrated planning: urban education/research, urban practice, and urban policy.

Therefore, the Athens and Nicosia Integrated Planning Labs that we will establish are coordinated by the two ''Higher Education'' institutions of the team ('''[https://www.survey.ntua.gr/en/departments/geo National Technical University of Athens]''' and '''[https://www.ucy.ac.cy/?lang=en University of Cyprus]''') since they have deep ties with local policy and practice actors that are included in the partnership as partners and associated partners specifically for participating in the corresponding local Integrated Planning Labs.

'''[https://www.commonspace.gr/en Commonspace]''', apart from its role as ''practitioners'' in Athens Lab, provides crucial expertise in participatory planning, participatory action learning, and participatory procedures in general since they have significant expertise in multi-stakeholder engagement by developing the city lab '''''[https://en.participatorylab.org/ participatory LAB: Laboratory of Spatial, Urban and Environmental Participatory Planning for Climate Change Adaptation]'''''.

Also, in the Athens Integrated Planning Lab, the '''Greek Planners Association''' (''practice and policy actor''), the '''Hellenic Ministry of Environment''' and the '''City of Athens''' (''policy actors'') have been included as associated partners, while in its '''Nicosia''' counterpart, '''ALA Planning Partnership''' (''practice actor'') and '''Nicosia Development Agency''' (''policy actor'') have been included.

'''[https://urbancalculator.se/ Urban Calculator]''', a newcomer SME involved in state-of-the-art urban analytics, plays a crucial role in the partnership as a Knowledge node/follower lab from the world of work, since we wanted to explore and pilot how an enterprise -without the infrastructure of an HEI- could participate in the Transnational Network of Integrated Planning Labs.

Finally, '''[https://www.bondofunion.eu/en/ Bond of Union]''' a social cooperative with extensive expertise on urban issues deeply involved in education and European cooperation, is also taking part in the initiaiton of the network providing valuable experience through her work with civic society organisations, informal groups of citizens and in general associations working on urban issues.

To sum up, the partnership formed to develop the InPlaLabs project contains members that cover all required areas of proficiency to accomplish the aims and actions of the project. Each member of the team has pertinent knowledge in each of the relevant sectors. Special attention was paid to the creation of a solid alliance that its parties can collaborate in a valuable manner, hence assuring the achievement of all project’s functions and goals. That is the principal reason why the team considers members of distinct nature with supplementary roles, competencies, and profiles, namely: universities, consulting companies, and associations, which underline a fascinating mixture of knowledge, resources, and expertise.

== Why to join InPlaLabs Network ==

We envision an urban realm where all competent actors (academia, policymakers, practitioners and citizens) communicate seamlessly and cooperate to transform their cities into liveable, equitable and sustainable entities. Our network lays the groundwork for this integrated and collaborative future; a future adopting integrated planning principles, both addressing urban, transport and environmental issues, promoting equity and justice and embracing active participation. InPlaLabs rethink planning and define that as a comprehensive procedure, entailing different fields and interests and not a mere sum of individual scientific and practical fields.

So why would someone join the InPlaLabs Network for Integrated Planning?
Here is our pitch:
* '''Access''' to a comprehensive set of materials and resources through InPlaLabs VIrtual Knowledge Hub that includes a wiki repository and an open learning platform. For example: lectures, tutorials, references, a compendium of data sources
* '''Influence''' knowledge creation for integrated planning in a tangible way. By participating in the co-creation workshops organised by InPlaLabs, you can effectively shape the micro-courses and other learning activities to be developed by InPlaLabs
* '''Upskilling''' on green digital skills and novel transdisciplinary approaches on integrated planning by two esteemed universities in city planning (NTUA and UCY), as well as by interdisciplinary teams developing advanced methodologies and tools in participatory planning (commonspace) and urban analytics (Urban Calculator)
* ''' Networking''', Synergies and Interaction with various city planning actors from different sectors (education, research, practice, and policy) providing the opportunity to participate in open calls and events.

== About InPlaLabs==

== The Challenge ==

== Meet the initiators ==

Fill out this '''[form https://forms.gle/hLMxki4s7t5qmGak6]''' to join InPlaLabs Network of Integrated Planning!
Contribute to the dialogue about integrated planning and participate in the activities of InPlaLabs Network!

Our interests lie in mobility, urban planning, evidence-based processes and participatory planning, thus reflecting InPlaLabs main objectives.

'''Key Activities''' of InPlalab's Network for Integrated Planning:

'''''To establish a sustainable and impactful network for continuous improvement and innovation in planning'''''

==Key Terms==
===Integrated Planning===
Integrated Planning reflects a holistic approach to spatial development, combining urban planning, mobility, and participatory processes to ensure sustainable and functional urban communities. Our focus extends beyond traditional rationales where planners acted independently, thus fostering multi-disciplinary collaboration to address the complex challenges of modern cities.

===Network===
The InPlaLabs Network is a gathering of professionals, academics, policymakers and community leaders connected across various places, but united by a common goal: to reshape the future of urban planning towards inclusivity, sustainability, equity and resilience. Through this network, members gain access to a rich reservoir of resources, data, expertise, and collaborative opportunities. The network facilitates active interaction and communication between each member and promotes Integrated Planning principles to the broader community.

== Our principles ==

InPlaLabs is firmly dedicated to core principles which are the following: Sustainability, Climate Justice, Spatial Justice and Equity, (Active) Participation, Democratic procedures, Knowledge exchange and Inclusiveness. These principles function as a strong guidance for the network’s operations and underpin our commitment to an Integrated Planning rationale. InPlaLabs stands for bringing different actors together under the common vision of making our cities better.

== Key Structures ==

'''InPlaLabs Charter''' describes the scope, governance, principles, values and activities of InPlaLabs network, as well as the means and processes for systemic knowledge exchange, sharing, and co-creation among its members. I also explains the procedures for joining the network and how this differs for individuals and organisations. It is a comprehensive document presenting the conceptual and organisational model of InPlaLab's Network for Integrated Planning.

'''InPlaLabs Virtual Knowledge Hub''' is the virtual space where the network and interested parties in general have access to theoretical and practical references, methods, and approaches for climate-resilient, human-oriented integrated planning. It consists of this wiki and the [https://helios.ntua.gr/course/view.php?id=6346&lang=en InPlaLabs Open Learning Platform].

'''InPlaLabs participatory action learning approach''' refers to a participatory guide including facilitation material and resources describing the Network's participatory action learning approach that horizontally runs all its activities to ensure inclusion and democratic participation in all Network´s activities. By that way, it will be feasible to replicate the present proposal that not only considers the creation of knowledge via the integration of different disciplines but also the exchange/co-creation/sharing of knowledge via the integration of different roles of planning community (Research/Education, Policy and Practice).

The InPlaLabs Network is a dynamic total of professionals, academics, students, policymakers, and community leaders connected across various cities and countries, but united by a common goal: to reshape the future of urban planning towards inclusivity, sustainability, equity and resilience. Through this network, members gain access to a rich reservoir of resources, data, expertise, and collaborative opportunities. The network facilitates active interaction and communication between each member and promotes Integrated Planning principles to the broader community.

Promoting participatory philosophy is evident both among the core activities promoted by the network and its members as well as in the way they collaborate to plan, design, make decisions and implement these actions. In this section, we will delve further into those participatory activities that could be used in order to ensure an effective collaboration scheme among the network members, create stronger bonds among them and finally support the development of impactful, quality outcomes that are able to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of the network.

Based on the above, participatory activities are essential among the InPlaLabs Network's members for the following critical reasons:
* '''Enhanced Collaboration''': They foster a collaborative environment where members can share insights, expertise, and resources, leading to more comprehensive and innovative solutions.
* '''Inclusive Decision-Making''': These activities ensure that diverse perspectives are considered in planning and decision-making processes, promoting inclusivity and equity.
* '''Stronger Bonds among the Members of the Network''': Engaging in participatory activities helps build stronger relationships and a sense of community among members, enhancing trust and cooperation.
* '''Knowledge Co-creation and Sharing''': Such activities facilitate continuous learning and the exchange of ideas, ensuring members stay informed about the latest developments and best practices in urban planning.
* '''Interdisciplinary Integration''': They highlight the network's interdisciplinary nature, allowing for a holistic approach to urban planning that incorporates various fields of expertise.
* '''Quality Outcomes''': By involving members in participatory processes, the network can produce more impactful and high-quality outcomes that address the complex challenges of urban planning effectively.

To this end, participatory actions are promoted to describe the way network members interact in a more organized manner. These activities can be multiple corresponding to different needs, aims and objectives each time. In the following list the most effective and crucial of them are presented but there is always an open discussion to improve them by grasping the current needs of the members involved as well as the expected outcomes that need to be delivered by them. In more detail, the following means for collaborative action will be considered by the network members:

===#1 Participatory Workshops among Network Members===
Regular participatory workshops among network members with the support of various participatory tools provide platforms for members to share their expertise, learn from each other, and work together to co-create actions and knowledge to deal with urban planning challenges more effectively. These sessions emphasize the importance of diverse perspectives and can lead to more inclusive and innovative outcomes.

===#2 Participatory Workshops with Invited Stakeholders and Community Members===
Scheduled workshops with external stakeholders and community members according to the matter of concern and the target that needs to be reached. These planned discussions can be themed around specific topics such as sustainable development, equitable housing, or resilient infrastructure depending on networks directions and helping them to better grasp current issues of high matter of concern in the decision-making environment in which their activities are placed. Such activities can have a national, transnational, or international spatial reference depending on the aims of the network and the corresponding issue of concern. Encouraging network members to participate in or lead community engagement initiatives can strengthen ties between the network and the broader community. These initiatives can include public consultations, workshops with local stakeholders, and collaborative projects with community organizations.

===#3 Virtual Knowledge Hub===
Digital means will be developed allowing members to engage in continuous dialogue, exchange knowledge, look for information and resources, share insights, and seek advice on various projects and issues. This virtual space will serve as a repository of knowledge and a place for ongoing interaction, fostering a sense of community, collaboration, knowledge co-creation and sharing.

===#4 Joint Research Projects===
Encouraging members to participate in joint research projects can lead to groundbreaking studies and reports that benefit from the diverse expertise within the network. Collaborative research can be supported through shared funding, resources, and access to data, enhancing the quality and impact of the outcomes, supporting network’s knowledge co-creation as well as future sustainability.

===#5 Regular Webinars and Online Training===
Hosting webinars and online training sessions on various aspects of urban planning ensures that all members have access to the latest knowledge and tools. These sessions can cover topics like community engagement, sustainable practices, and policy development, education and contemporary tools and methods, promoting continuous learning and skill enhancement. These actions can be supported by existing members of external invited professionals depending on the subject under discussion.

===#6 Mentorship Programs===
Establishing a mentorship program within the network can help build stronger bonds among members. Experienced professionals can mentor newer members, providing guidance, support, and valuable insights, while fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and mutual support.

===#7 Interdisciplinary Working Groups===
Creating interdisciplinary more targeted working groups focused on specific urban planning challenges / topics can support member to improve their collaboration and harness the diverse expertise within the network leading to more effective collaboration and working schemes. These groups will work on developing comprehensive strategies and solutions, benefiting from the varied perspectives of their members. This collaboration scheme will be considered and proposed in the future for further development of the network when the diversity and the growth of its participants will be able to support it.

===#8 Exploiting the function of Communities of Practice (CoP)===
Communities of practice, also known as CoPs, are groups of individuals who share a common interest or passion and come together to learn from each other's experiences and expertise (Wenger-Trayner and Wenger-Trayner, 2015). These networks are dynamic and member-driven, where people gather to support one another and achieve individual and collective goals. Think about it - you've likely been part of CoPs in various contexts, such as a sports team, a book club, or a volunteer group. In fact, CoPs are ubiquitous, existing in every corner of our lives. They're often overlooked, yet they play a crucial role in facilitating informal learning and knowledge-sharing.
Regarding InPlaLabs Network's activities, we recognize the importance of collaborating with existing CoPs that focus on supporting their collective action. Our role is to facilitate knowledge co-creation and sharing, while also promoting the theoretical understanding of their actions. By doing so, we aim to contribute to the development of knowledge around their role, the way they operate, and the implications of their actions on achieving sustainability and resilience in urban environments.

===#9 Conferences and Networking Events===
Organizing annual conferences and networking events provides opportunities for members to meet in person, share their work, and build stronger professional relationships. These events can also feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, and breakout sessions to advance integrated spatial planning through collaboration, and evidence-based strategies, making cities more adaptable, equitable, and sustainable; while opening up member activities to the wider academic community, policy scene and public.

== Our principles ==
